Your Spirit. Knows

OUR SPIRIT. KNOWS
She stood. In contemplation there.
She would. Feel it in the brisk of air.
She could. See beyond stars in sky.
She knew. A change had come nigh.

The light haze. As sun shone through.
Trunks of gums. Shadowing purple hues.
Rough ground. Covered in brown bark.
Humming of insects. Listening in. Hark.

She walked about. Scrubland bush.
Listening deeply. To the seasons hush.
She saw. The Pelicans. Migrating flight.
She saw. Native flora. Sprouting to life.

She saw. The clouds .Were a scudding.
Grass Trees. And Red Banksia. Budding.
She could see. By the flight. Of ants;
*DJERAN’ season. Has come. To her land.

The Spirit of Dadirri:

To Listen deeply. Is to connect.

Congratulations to indigenous elder, artist and educator Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann for being named the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year.  She has dedicated her life to giving Aboriginal children the skills to navigate western and traditional culture.

‘Dadirri’ is an ancient living practice that supports spiritual well-being. Like the soft underbelly of a crocodile, this is the gentle, quiet, deep spring that is in all of us; where our sense of identity, belonging, purpose and connection is explored, founded and nurtured. As it is in me, it is also in others. It is the Indigenous gift to all Australians’
